About Butek Portstoken
Who We Are
Butek Portstoken is a specialist provider of temporary potable water infrastructure to UK water utilities — combining more than 40 years of potable water storage manufacturing expertise with deep knowledge of water industry regulation, operations, and project delivery.
We are a joint venture between Portstoken Ltd and Butyl Products Ltd (trading as Butek Tanks), one of the UK's most experienced manufacturers of large-scale potable water storage tanks. The joint venture brings together Butek's manufacturing heritage — bolted steel tanks and specialist potable water liner systems proven in demanding environments worldwide — with Portstoken's water industry project management and regulatory expertise.
The result is a fully integrated supply chain, from tank manufacture and liner fabrication through to turnkey site delivery, operation, and reinstatement, under a single commercial relationship.
What That Means in Practice
When you engage Butek Portstoken, you are not dealing with a plant hire company that has adapted its offer for the water sector. We were built for this environment. Our team understands DWI requirements, water company procurement frameworks, CDM obligations, operational resilience planning, and the practical realities of maintaining critical water assets within constrained operational windows.
Butek and Portstoken operate as a single delivery team, sharing technical resource, risk, and programme responsibility. For procurement teams and framework managers, this means a single point of accountability for the complete solution.
Butek Portstoken was also established around a particular infrastructure philosophy: temporary operational requirements should not automatically result in permanent construction. Our systems are designed to provide operational resilience with the minimum practical environmental footprint — reducing concrete use, minimising site disturbance, and ensuring infrastructure can be fully removed, recovered, and redeployed once operational need has passed.

AMP8 & the Cunliffe Report
The AMP8 investment period (2025–2030) represents the largest sustained capital programme UK water companies have faced. The Independent Water Commission's Cunliffe Report calls for the sector to do more with constrained capital while improving asset performance and resilience.
Butek Portstoken's rental model is directly aligned with those priorities. By shifting storage and treatment capacity from upfront capital expenditure to a flexible, outcomes-based rental model, we enable water companies to deploy infrastructure faster, at lower initial cost, and only for as long as it is needed — freeing capital for core network investment and supporting better asset health and operational resilience across the AMP8 cycle.
For known intervention sites, early engagement and pre-enablement allow foundations and tie-ins to be established before operational windows open, removing future deployments from the programme critical path.
